Coaching Principles & Techniques:
Put the kids first: Safety & Order. |
Actively look for kids adrift: Give structure
to individuals and groups. |
Help kids do things: But don't do things
for them. |
Be formal: Follow the rules yourself
and be a good role model. |
Command respect: Kids answer "yes,
sir," "yes ma'am," and call you "Coach" |
Watch the kids: Kids like your attention;
being close by keeps them working. |
Be nonverbal: Physical prompts and gesture
rather than voice. |
Use Positive Teaching: Never raise your
voice or use physical punishment here. |
Know the risks: Kids bumping heads, Coaches
holding targets or straining. |
Tell the Teacher: Concerns and suggestions. |

Positive
Teaching overall:
Mostly reward-based. |
Point out & praise kids who are following
rules. |
Consistent
structure:
Concrete & specific what you do and
do not want. |
Review rules with individual or whole
class as needed. |
Actions & Consequences:
External control by Teacher just a tool,
of temporary use. |
Ultimate goal is student's competent
Self-control. |
Penalties:
Social influence
only:
Never physical punishment. |
Be emotionally neutral during penalty,
positive after. |
Technique:
Use good judgment. |
Take into account the kid and the situation. |
Tell kid the rule, etc. |
or |
Kyong-go ("warning") |
Call whole class to attention. |
say "Kyong-go" firmly to kid
and state the rule. |
e.g., "Kyong-go, no touching") |
Have kid sit until Teacher decides to
re-admit. |
1st Kyong-go, kid sits until Teacher
says. |
2nd Kyong-go, kid sits through end of
class. |
or |
Have kid leave class immediately. |
Significant problems must be discussed immediately with
Misha or Noreen Thackrey and kid's responsible adult. |
